I recently watched Sorry to Bother You, which stars Lakeith Stanfield and satirizes the idea of code-switching to be successful in the white environment. I was raised in the Caribbean so I looked at it as a joke, but this article helped cement the idea that this is actual reality for so many black people in America. It’s just so disturbing to me. I understand how it is necessary but I can’t help but hate the idea that it’s something we have to do — adapt to them instead of them accommodating us and our full selves.
